Worcestershire forced to battle hard on opening day at Derbyshire

Published 03/04/2026

A gritty first day of the Rothesay County Championship season saw Worcestershire take four Derbyshire wickets on a day largely dominated by the home side.

As expected, Worcestershire’s return to Division Two was far from plain sailing during the early exchanges, with Tom Taylor (2-99) working until the 21st over of the day for the visitor’s first breakthrough.

Despite the favourable bowling conditions, Worcestershire’s seam attack were forced to work continuously against a Derbyshire top-order intent on making life difficult for the away side, who cashed in after being asked to bat first.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby registered his first wicket for the Club before Matthew Waite struck to reduce the hosts to 159-3, and the Pears gained momentum when Taylor returned to take his second wicket of the day.

However, an unbeaten 210 run stand between Martin Andersson and Luis Reece dominated the remainder of the first day’s play, with Brett D’Oliveira’s side in need of a bright start to day two in order to keep hopes of a winning return to Division Two alive.

Given the conditions, which meant the floodlights were on from the start, it was hardly surprising Worcestershire elected to field, but the Pears bowling unit were unfortunate to see the sustained pressure they applied have the desired outcome on a greenish pitch.

Strong gusts from a south-westerly wind upset the rhythm of the bowlers at times although, Alan Richardson’s men continued to run in and ask questions of the home side.

Oliver Hannon-Dalby, signed on a 14 day loan from Warwickshire, showed signs of his class early on, but went unrewarded as Derbyshire navigated their way through the opening exchanges.

When the first chance did come, it was a case of what could have been, as Ethan Brookes nearly held onto a tough chance at second slip after an edge from Jewell on 23 off a Matthew Waite delivery.

Tom Taylor was the first to make an inroad for Worcestershire, as the man who took 58 Division One wickets last year, made his first breakthrough in 2026 when he had half-century maker Came, caught behind by Gareth Roderick.

Even so, it had been a good morning for the hosts who were initially pegged back early in the afternoon by tighter bowling which earned Hannon-Dalby his first Worcestershire wicket when Matt Montgomery drove low to point, and was caught by vice-captain Jake Libby, as the Pears sought to cash in on their second wicket of the day.

Jewell cover drove Taylor to reach 50 from 104 balls but was then squared up by a Waite ball that rose on him and this time Brookes made no mistake to see the back of the set batter.

Lead man Taylor then returned, to remove Brooke Guest, who got a leading edge to cover attempting to pull and was caught by the safe hands of Libby as Worcestershire’s hopes of asserting their authority in the match returned, with the home side 181-4.

Andersson however, had other ideas, as he played with increasing authority to reach 50 off only 55 balls and keep Brett D’Oliveira searching for a way to find his side a route back into the match.

Despite the introduction of Ethan Brookes and the skipper himself, Derbyshire ended the afternoon session in a good position and they continued to press on after tea.

Reece accelerated after a cautious start to move to his half century from 77 balls, with Worcestershire struggling to find a way to break what was by now a well-established partnership.

Andersson drove Taylor for his 13th four to complete an excellent hundred as the pair kicked on, with a gloomy day at the Central Co-op County Ground proving a tough backdrop for a Pears side competing in their first Division Two match since 2023.

Reece survived a tough diving chance to second slip on 63 and Worcestershire’s difficult day was compounded towards the close of play as Adam Finch pulled up in his 16th over and was forced to leave the field.
