“We will bat for as long as we can”: Lategan determined to fight on as Worcestershire continue to battle at Derbyshire

Dan Lategan says his side will continue to fight on despite the fact Worcestershire enter Day Three up against it at Derbyshire.

The teenage opener, who ended the second-day 77 not-out, showed superb resilience on a pitch and in conditions that flattered to deceive in the opening round of the Rothesay County Championship.

Having worked tirelessly with the ball for 140 overs, Worcestershire’s bowling attack collected four more scalps across the second day, before the hosts declared on 625-8, leaving Jake Libby and Dan Lategan to open the batting for the Pears.

A promising opening stand of 81 was broken when vice-captain Libby, was caught for 24, whilst Lategan looked to push on at the top for his side, with the visitors very much up against it.

The Worcestershire pathway graduate showed his class however, batting through the remainder of the day, despite the loss of Kashif Ali (5), to end the day unbeaten on 77.

Lategan, who holds the key for his side heading into day three, said the Pears will continue to press on and build as much pressure as possible at the Central Co-op County Ground.

“We will come with fresh minds tomorrow and just try and bat as long as we can and get as many runs on the board as we can.
“After you spend as much time in the field as we did, going back on after 10 minutes and switching your mind on to batting, it can be tough.
“Mo Abbas doesn’t miss much, so it was just about trying to negate that when it was nipping around early on which were the biggest challenges for me.
“The wind was very, very heavy out there and Bashir was getting quite a lot of drift when he was bowling, so it was about trying to keep that in the back of your mind and watching the ball as hard as you can for as long as you can.”
Lategan and partner Adam Hose, will resume the third day of action 113-2, looking for a route back into the match for the Pears who will be aiming to take the game deep into the final two days in search of a positive result.
