Worcestershire Women’s Rapids Metro Bank One Day Cup began with defeat on Sunday, with the side coming out second best in an enterprising contest against Sussex Sharks Women at The County Ground.
On a wicket that looked to favour the batting side, the hosts won the toss and duly elected to bat, dominating the opening exchanges.
The visitors stuck to their task throughout, claiming two wickets in as many deliveries late on, however Sussex’s top order’s aggressive start saw them finish on a commanding 341-3.
Gwen Davies replied with a superb half century as she looked to lead the charge in response, but despite Worcestershire’s endeavour to chase the Shark’s total, Ed Wilson’s side eventually fell to an opening day defeat by 155 runs.
The Women’s Rapids took to the field looking to begin their Metro Bank One Day Cup campaign in positive fashion, on a picturesque day at The County Ground in Hove.
Bowlers Jess Beach and Emily Churms sought to build on positive pre-season contributions and displayed early consistency with the ball.
Debutant Lucy Harris later joined the attack, helping to restrict the Sharks to 38/0 from the opening 10 overs.
Sussex’s opening pair proved resilient however, leading the Women’s Rapids skipper Clare Boycott to call upon Flora Bertwistle to provide some spin, in hope of disrupting the host’s first wicket stand, as Izzy Collis moved to her half century.
The decision soon paid off as Bertwistle struck, luring Phoebe Wilkinson (26) to chip into the grateful hands of Phoebe Brett at mid-off, for the Women’s Rapids’ first wicket of the 2026 season.
Collis remained impressively fluent however, with Wilkinson’s replacement Nancy Harman continuing to provide strong support, as Sussex began to take on the Worcestershire attack.
Ebony-Jade Tweats made a stunning diving attempt to catch Harman at deep mid-wicket but could not quite hold on, as the Women’s Rapids sought their second wicket of the morning.
The Sussex top order remained stubborn. Harman reached her half century in the 34th over, shortly before the second wicket stand brought up their 100 partnership.
Collis then secured her well-deserved century in the 37th over.
Worcestershire’s resilience eventually told in the 45th over, as Meg Bishop employed sharp reactions to run Collis (133) out, with the help of Olivia Gough behind the stumps.
Buoyed by a vital wicket, the next ball saw a vicious Beach delivery angle in and snag a Bella Johnson edge, as she was caught behind and removed first ball.
A late flurry of runs saw Harman finish unbeaten for 124, as Sharks ended their innings at 341/3.
Worcestershire’s opening batters set about laying foundations for the chase ahead, but were dealt an early blow when Boycott (9) was caught at slip.
In at number three, Caitlin Baker-Smith started well with Gwen Davies as the pair produced a confident 50-run partnership.
Baker-Smith’s promising cameo came to an end in the 18th over however, as Davies continued in composed fashion to anchor Ed Wilson’s side’s chase.
Employing the reverse sweep to devastating effect, Davies notched her half century, picking her moments wisely to go after Sussex’s bowlers.
Now with Tweats for company, the pair showed promise, only for Davies (52) to be caught off a full toss to end what was a very encouraging stay at the crease.
Tweats continued, looking to emulate Davies’ efforts, but was eventually undone having been pinned in front of the stumps, departing for a hard fought 28.
At 146/4, momentum seemed to be firmly with the home side, as Gough and Harris came and went, making 17 and 15 respectively.
As the clouds moved in at The County Ground however, the Sharks bowlers continued their clinical display as the Women’s Rapids tail end fell away, leaving Sussex Sharks victorious by 155 runs.
