Worcestershire County Cricket Club used their Rothesay County Championship fixture against Kent at New Road on Friday 24 April as a platform for an important cause, hosting a dedicated Domestic Abuse Awareness Day.
The initiative highlighted the rising domestic abuse cases across the UK, bringing the issue into focus on the Club’s opening home matchday of the season.
The Club partnered with White Ribbon, a leading organisation engaging men and boys in ending violence against women, with staff wearing white ribbons throughout the day as a visible show of support.
A dedicated stand in the Chestnut Marquee saw several specialist organisations engage with supporters and use their platform to promote awareness.
Amongst those in attendance were Women’s Aid – West Mercia, National Centre for Domestic Violence, WMRSASC – Purple Leaf, and Victim Support – West Mercia.
The day underscored the role sports clubs can play in supporting community issues beyond the boundary ropes.
HR and Business Admin Assistant Sophie Marchbank emphasised the significance of the initiative, highlighting the engagement from supporters and staff alike.
“It was brilliant to see so many people around the ground getting involved with the initiative on the day.
“Domestic abuse is an issue that doesn’t disappear when the day ends. We will continue to use our platform to raise awareness, challenge stigma, and support those affected.
This event is the beginning of an ongoing effort to ensure the club remains a place where people feel safe, heard, and empowered to speak up.
“I would like to thank the organisations that took their time to come and join us for the day, as well as everyone who helped put the event together, and the staff who assisted along the way.”
